يظهر في الصورة تضخم واضح في اللثة العلوية والسفلية، وهو ما يحدث أحيانا عند مرضى ارتفاع ضغط الدم المزمن الذين يتناولون أدوية خفض الضغط لفترة طويلة من نوع حاصرات قنوات الكالسيوم (Calcium Channel Blocker, CCB)، وهي أدوية تخفض الضغط عن طريق إرخاء الأوعية الدموية. من الممكن أن تؤثر هذه الأدوية على أنسجة اللثة فتسبب زيادة حجمها وتورمها بهذا الشكل، ويعد دواء نيفيديبين (nifedipine) من أكثر هذه الأدوية ارتباطا بهذه الحالة.
إهمال نظافة الفم قد يجعل التضخم أوضح. هذه الحالة تحتاج تقييما مشتركا بين طبيب الأسنان والطبيب المعالج للضغط، ولا يجب إيقاف دواء الضغط أو تغييره دون استشارة الطبيب.
